Gallup: Retirement Remains Americans' Top Financial Worry

According to the annual Gallup Economy and Personal Finance poll conducted this month, not having enough money for retirement remains the top concern for Americans, followed by medical costs caused by a serious illness or accident and maintaining a standard of living. People aged 30-64 are most concerned about retirement. Though economic concerns are down from two years ago, worries about debt seem to be rising — perhaps because more people are taking advantage of low interest rates.

Highlights of the Gallup poll include:

• Younger people are most concerned about medical emergencies — perhaps indicating that many are uninsured and are worried about debt.
• Regular medical costs, paying monthly bills, debt and saving for kids’ college education are also high on the list.
• Though older people are looking forward to retirement, it is also a major cause of stress for them.
