The Best Song About Retirement

If retirement has a soundtrack, it’s going to be one heck of a playlist.

This week we asked NAPA Net readers to vote on the best song(s) about retirement. We not only got a lot of votes, we also received a lot of additional “requests.” I think it’s fair to say we have something for just about every musical (or retirement ready/not ready) status.

That said, the top rated song on this playlist was:

We Gotta Get Out of This Place – The Animals

Followed closely by two from the 1980s:

Too Much Time on My Hands – Styx
I Can't Hold Back – Survivor

While rounding out the top five were:

Born to Be Wild – Steppenwolf
Too Late to Turn Back Now – Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose

As for the rest of the top 10:

Work is a Four-Letter Word – The Smiths
Good Times Roll – The Cars
Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
Born to Run – Bruce Springsteen
Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes – Jimmy Buffet

The next 10:

It’s a Beautiful Morning – The New Rascals
I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
A Hard Day’s Night – The Beatles
Take It Easy – The Eagles
Money – Pink Floyd
Leaving on a Jet Plane – Peter, Paul & Mary
Don’t Stop – Fleetwood Mac
Time Has Come Today – The Chambers Brothers
Money For Nothing – Dire Straits
Already Gone – Eagles

The rest of the list:

Chain Gang – Sam Cooke
My Way – Frank Sinatra
Na Na Hey Hey – Jeronimo
I Don’t Care Anymore – Phil Collins
We’re Not Gonna Take It – Twisted Sister
Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay – Otis Redding
Take This Job and Shove It – Johnny Paycheck 57
Don’t Look Back – Boston
Won’t Get Fooled Again – The Who
Somewhere Over the Rainbow – Judy Garland
I’ve Had the Time of My Life – Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
When I'm 64 – The Beatles

One song that didn’t make the “cut” – doubtless because most hadn’t heard of it – was a user-submitted entry titled, appropriately enough, “Do What You Wanna Do (The Retirement Song).” I doubt that you’ll hear it on the radio, but you might want to check it out here.
