Vacation: An Inconvenient Place to Work From

Do you ever take a vacation where you do no work at all — turning off your phone and never checking email? If you do, you’re probably in the minority. Most people do some work while vacationing, given the nearly ubiquitous access to the Internet all over the world.

But why not turn everything off completely? Here are some reasons:

• You’re the principal at your firm and need to be in touch (which means you have a practice, not a business).
• It limits the work you’ll need to do when you get back, especially returning all those emails.
• If you don’t know what’s going on at the office and with clients, you worry.
• You’re bored on vacation.

Many people limit calls to emergencies only and return emails before the day starts or after it’s over.

There’s a real intrinsic benefit to shutting down completely, but that takes discipline — and is the only time you should use your “Out of Office” response.
