DC Practices Rank Among the Biggest Advisor Moves

Whether we admit it or not, most of us look at advisor movement not only to see trends (i.e., which BDs and RIAs are gaining and which channel is growing) but also to see if we know the advisor or the team. So when InvestmentNews posted its year-end wrapup of advisor changes, it was hard to resist a quick look — only to find that more than 20% of the top 25 moves since 2009 involved DC practices.

That number would have been higher if some big names were not omitted. Along with the vastly increased number of DC practices, the InvestmentNews data shows that DC practices are now mainstream, not niche anymore, and that BDs, RIAs and recruiters have noticed.

InvestmentNews’ list of top advisor moves includes:

  • Peggy Whitmore joining CAPTRUST
  • Chris Venuti and Larry Mills joining Morgan Stanley
  • Kelley Snook & Co. joining LPL
  • Stephen Brown joining Stifel Nicolaus
  • Jim Pupillo joining HighTower
  • Kenneth Ingham Joining LPL

Recent changes that did not make the list include:

  • 401(k)Advisors joining NFP
  • Jania Stout joining HighTower
  • DCA joining CAPTRUST

Do you know any big groups with significant DC practices that underwent change in 2014? If so, share your intel below.
