Investors Want Gov’t to Enhance 401(k) Accounts

This may be news only to the president and Congress, but not only do American workers think the government should take steps to enhance tax incentives for retirement plans like 401(k)s, but most don’t expect to rely on Social Security — which younger workers don’t even think will be around when they retire.

Eighty three percent of the more than 1,000 people polled by Gallup in conjunction with Wells Fargo in November thought that tax-favored retirement plans like 401(k)s are very important or extremely important to achieving a comfortable retirement, and 69% want the government to encourage companies to offer these types of plans.

Though the 2012 elections are over, there’s always another one ahead. With DC plans so prevalent — and becoming more important as fewer and fewer workers are covered by private and public DB plans — perhaps the voice of the American worker will be heard clearly.
