My understanding is that one shortcoming of "auto portability", at least today, is that if the account has Roth 401k assets, once they are moved to a Roth IRA, they cannot be rolled over to a subsequent employer's plan.

It's probably more accurate to describe that as a shortcoming of the federal tax law as it relates to Roth 401(k) rollovers. Auto-portability has to work within the "guardrails" of the tax law, after all...
