READER POLL: And The Most Viewed, Most Scary, Favorite Scary Movie is…

Industry Trends and Research

Yesterday was, of course, Halloween – but even with 2019 trick-or-treating behind us, we’ve got some good recommendations on movies (and stories) that will have you on the edge of your seat…

Most Viewed

We started by sharing a loooong list of favorite scary movies – although, oddly, we appear to have missed Scream, Friday the 13th, The Hitcher (a truly creepy one), Last House on the Left, Army of Darkness, Shaun of the Dead, Alien, The Thing (one of my favorites) and Night of the Living Dead) – and asked readers which one(s) they had seen.

The top 10 most seen were:

86% - Jaws

78% - The Shining (the 1980 version)

73% - The Sixth Sense

72% - The Exorcist (1973)

65% - Aliens

65% - Silence of the Lambs

62% - Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) – Johnny Depp’s film debut, btw

62% - Psycho (1960)

59% - Carrie (the 1976 version)

56% - Halloween (1978)

Favorite Flicks

Asked to choose their favorite, NAPA-Net readers went with:

14% - The Sixth Sense

14% - The Shining (the 1980 version)

9% - Aliens

9% - Halloween (1978)

9% - The 2016 presidential campaign (kidding, just kidding! – though it was voted on)

6% - Silence of the Lambs

6% - Stephen King's It (the original scary clown)

The Scariest Movie Is (Was?)…

However, asked to pick the scariest movie (though it might also be a favorite), NAPA-Net readers went with:

17% - The Exorcist (1973)

11% - Halloween (1978)

8% - Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

8% - The Shining (the 1980 version)

6% - The Blair Witch Project (launching a whole genre based on “found” shaky camera footage)

6% - The Ring

6% - Jaws

6% - The 2016 presidential campaign (still kidding, just kidding!)

Reader Comments

Readers were reserved in their comments this week (mostly to help identify some films that got overlooked). That said, here’s a sampling:

  • Ugh – I hate scary movies!!!
  • Watch the Travel Channel for the scariest places in America – is fun scary! Also 'Dead Files' which is super cool scary :)
  • I don’t like scary movies but I love mystery and suspense – hate violence!
  • If the movie gets too scary for me, I start laughing at the stupid decisions the people are making... then I'm not so scared!
  • It always makes me just a little bit sad when I get to the end of a scary book and it turns out there was nothing supernatural going on after all.
  • Our current political climate may be the scariest thing yet!
  • I prefer the old black-and-white horror movies. You know what’s coming, but don’t see the blood and gore.

But our Editor’s Choice goes to the reader who commented, “Just wait, the 2020 presidential campaign will be the scariest ever.”

Thanks to everyone who participated in our weekly NAPA-Net Reader Poll!

Oh – and if you’d like to see the complete list of scary movies – you can check them out here.
