READER POLL: Bosox or Blue?

The Red Sox have jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2018 World Series – but how do NAPA Net readers think – and want – it to all play out?

By now you know that this 114th edition of the World Series is being played between the American League (AL) champion Boston Red Sox and the National League (NL) champion Los Angeles Dodgers – the first time those two storied franchises have met in the so-called “Fall Classic” since… 1916!

And if the current trend holds – and the Red Sox take home another World Series banner – well, more than half (57%) of this week’s NAPA Net reader poll respondents say that’s the team they’re rooting for. A mere 8% are pulling for the Dodgers, a figure dwarfed by the 27% who are rooting for a team that is no longer in contention, and merely equal to the number rooting for the end of the baseball season.

More than that, 70% expect the Red Sox to win it all. “Since I’m in an AL city I generally root for the AL team (unless the NL team is the Cubs, my adopted NL team),” explained one reader. “However, since the Brewers used to be in the AL, I was rooting for them against the Dodgers and probably would have rooted for them in the series. Oh and I also break my ‘root for the AL’ rule if the AL team is the Yankees.”

One disappointed Cub fan (and there must be many of them out there) was “…convinced Boston is going to win. Not because I want them to, but because I don't want them to. About the only worse choice is St. Louis. #FlytheW.”

Other comments:

“Go Cubs!!! Whoops, I guess not so much. As they say, the old cliché, maybe next year.” (told ya)

“Love me some Sox, it’s their year!”

“It’s hard to bet against Clayton Kershaw.”

“Baseball is the ultimate game of strategy which get heightened in the World Series when managers have to contend with American League rules and National League rules. The skill level of these guys whether it is hitting a 100 mph pitch (or even delivering a 100 mph pitch) is extraordinary. My only wish is that MLB would pay their minor league players at least a standard of living above minimum wage. Yes, some guys sign for lots of money, but others who have the same dream do not. They deserve to chase their dreams and still be able to live. And yes, I have a minor league playing baseball player son who was an undrafted free agent!! Now that my editorial comments are done … Should be a great series between these two storied franchises.”

“I like baseball, but I think the whole shebang should conclude before Halloween, and they should schedule the season accordingly.”

“Fox Sports gets its wish: a coastal World Series between two marquee teams. The rest of us yawn.”

Well, even if you don’t like baseball – or don’t like the two teams (still) playing – there area lot of great movies about the sport (or that take place around it). We asked readers to weigh in with their favorites.

Here they are – ranked in order:

24% - Field of Dreams
15% - Bull Durham
12% - Moneyball
10% - The Sandlot
9% - A League of Their Own
8% - Major League
5% - Fever Pitch
4% - The Natural
4% - The Bad News Bears
3% - Trouble with the Curve
2% - The Rookie
2% - The Pride of the Yankees

Thanks to everyone who participated in this week’s NAPA Net Reader Poll – and Play Ball!
