And NAPA Net Readers’ Favorite Holiday Movie of 2017 Is…

Last year we wondered “Is a Wonderful Life’s Christmas Story Love Actually a Die Hard Christmas Vacation?” What’s topping NAPA Net readers’ holiday favorites this year?

We had just over 60 options for readers to choose from, and yet fewer than half drew any support at all (including classics like Meet Me in St. Louis, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, A Very Bundy Christmas, Holiday Inn and Planes, Trains and Automobiles).

Then there were those that got some, but not much, support:

  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

  • Scrooged

  • A Charlie Brown Christmas

  • In the Good Old Summertime/The Shop Around the Corner

  • Fred Claus

  • The Holiday (Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, Jude Law version)

  • Home Alone

  • The Family Stone

  • Bad Santa

  • A Christmas Carol (Mr. Magoo version)

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey version)

  • A Child's Christmas in Wales

  • The Polar Express

And then – the top 10:

#6: Miracle on 34th Street (traditional, with Natalie Wood)
#7: Die Hard
#8: The Bishop's Wife
#9: Love, Actually
#10: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon)

Top Viewed

Now, before we get to the top five, we also asked readers which of the holiday movies on our list they had seen this season, and the top viewed were:

Elf (45.10%),
A Charlie Brown Christmas (34.37%)
Christmas Vacation (31.74%)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon) (29.41%
It’s a Wonderful Life (27.45%)
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (25.49%)
A Christmas Story (25.49%)
Miracle on 34th Street (traditional, with Natalie Wood) (25.49%)
The Polar Express (25.49%)
Love, Actually (21.57%)
Die Hard (18.17%)

As for this year’s top holiday movies? Well (drumroll, please), it was:

#5: White Christmas
#4: Christmas Vacation
#3: It’s a Wonderful Life
#2: Elf

And the top-rated holiday movie – wresting the title away from It’s a Wonderful Life, and pushing aside Christmas Vacation – was:

#1: A Christmas Story

Reader Comments

There were, of course, some reader comments to share:

  • Enjoy this special time to spend with family and friends. Shut off the electronics and have meaningful conversations!

  • Love the surveys. Merry Christmas!

  • Ho, ho, ho, and Merry Christmas to you!

Not that there weren’t differences of opinion:

  • I am a sucker for Hallmark Christmas movies.

  • I love most of the classics you've listed. Please NO MORE Hallmark Christmas movies!

  • I hate It’s a Wonderful Life.

  • There are some movies as stated above that are associated with holidays but aren't essentially “holiday themes.” My family has always quoted Blazing Saddles or Slap Shot each year at dinner, it was always funny. I love movies, enjoying movies and the holidays with loved ones and in the end just being with family.

  • With the release of Star Wars movies every December any one of those movies has become a holiday tradition in my house with the kids.

  • Not enough time to watch TV! I can hardly keep up with my one show a week, and have full seasons of others recorded. I try to make more time for shows this time of year, but usually end up watching “the rest” of my Christmas shows after New Year’s.

  • A couple years ago, my niece and nephew (11 and 9) were visiting my wife and I for a few days over the summer. We wanted to do a movie night, and my niece found the Elf DVD in the TV stand and wanted to know what it was. They had never seen it! Needless to say, watching Elf on a warm July evening and watching their reactions was a wonderful, heartwarming time that we’ve never forgotten.

  • A Christmas Story is NOT a Christmas movie – it is the antithesis of the spirit of the season...

And, as one reader noted, “Wish I had time to watch more!”

Have a great holiday weekend, folks – and thanks to all who participated in this – and every week’s NAPA Net reader poll!
