National 401(k) Recordkeepers

The National 401(k) Record Keepers list includes vendors that provide record keeping services at the national level. This means that they have significant presence in all regions, whether measured by plans under management or by sales personnel. There are about 600 so-called “Record Keeping TPAs” and other providers (like regional banks) that do not have a national presence and are therefore not included on this list.

The first four columns — “Small”, “Mid”, “Large” and “Mega” — indicate the markets these record keepers primarily serve:
• Small = • Mid = $10-$100 million
• Large = $100-$250 million
• Mega = +$250 million

The “Distr” column indicates the primary method(s) of distribution, whether through advisors or direct (which can include institutional consultants). The final column specifies the method of service, which is either bundled — meaning all services are performed by the record keeper — or unbundled, where the record keeper partners with a local independent TPA that provides consulting and compliance services.

This list is an attempt to put a stake in the ground. We welcome your feedback, additions and corrections — which you can make by clicking on the comment button at the bottom of this page.
