Topics for Your Next Investment Committee Meeting Agenda

The ERISA attorneys at Ivins, Phillips and Barker recommend these four topics for your next investment committee meeting agenda:

1. Fees. This is still the No. 1 topic of discussion, as lawsuits against plan fiduciaries (including the $30 million settlement against International Paper) continue to raise important questios that the committee should address.
2. Fund selection. More complex than a cost analysis, this discussion should encompass fund management and stability, as well as the dispersal that can result from having too many funds in a single asset class.
3. The plan’s “safe” option. Recent events have raised questions about money market and stable value funds.
4. Target date funds. Does the asset class exposure and glide path make sense for the plan participant population? How are TDFs being monitored and evaluated? Does the TDF disclosure provide clear, useful information?

We recently addressed selection criteria for committee members here. Also, you may want to take in our Dec. 10 webinar on running and advising an investment committee.
