Is a Confirmation Vote Near for Walsh?

Regulatory Agencies

While it hasn’t been officially announced, published reports say that the vote to confirm Boston Mayor Martin Walsh as Secretary of Labor isn’t far off.

Citing an unnamed source, the Boston Herald reports that the U.S. Senate is expected to vote on Mayor Martin Walsh’s appointment as Labor secretary on March 22—putting a date on the mayor’s impending departure after weeks of uncertainty.

The Senate is expected next week to make a cloture vote, according to the Herald (citing a source close to the mayor)—a procedural step to clear the path for the final vote, which would come the following Monday, March 22, according to the report, citing that same source.

The timing of Walsh’s hearing had been a matter of curiosity following his Feb. 4 hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, where he was widely praised by members from both parties, even though many Republicans acknowledged that they may not agree with his policy positions. In addition, Walsh vowed to work with both parties to address retirement policy issues coming before the Department of Labor.

President Biden still has not named a nominee to serve as Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Employee Benefits Security Administration.
