If You Could Be a Doorknob or a Blade of Grass…

It’s not altogether clear (to me at least) what insights one might glean from the answer(s) to that particular interview question. Of course, that might explain why it was voted the weirdest interview question in this week’s NAPA Net reader poll.

Some people maintain that weird interview questions serve a valuable purpose: They help get past “canned” interview responses, provide insights into candidate’s creativity and/or ability to respond to stressful or uncertain situations. And some interviewers surely just do it for … spite.

Regardless, they are the kinds of questions that some interviewers treasure, and most interviewees dread. And this week our readers weighed in on the weirdest of the weird.

The rest of the top 10 were:

If you were trapped in a blender, what would you do to get out?

If you were a color, which one would you be and why?

If you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you be?

What's your favorite Disney Princess?

If you were asked to unload a 747 full of jelly beans, what would you do?

How would you wrangle a herd of cats?

Who would win in a fight between Spiderman and Batman?

If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be?

Do you believe in life on other planets?

And since some of you would no doubt like to expand your interview repartee, here’s the rest of the top 25:

If asked, would you lie for the company (this submitted by a reader)?

Has anyone ever told you that you are anal (this also submitted by a reader)?

How many people flew out of Chicago last year?

Describe the color yellow to somebody who's blind.

If you could compare yourself with any animal, which would it be and why?

How do I rate as an interviewer?

What's your favorite ‘90s jam?

If you were a car, what type would you be?

If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs — such as food and water — were taken care of, what two items…

If you could be a super hero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

What did you have for breakfast?

What superpower would you like to have? (I’m thinking the ability to answer weird interview questions.)

What would you do if you were the one survivor in a plane crash?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

And while it didn’t crack the top 25, I felt a certain personal affinity for “If you woke up and had 2,000 unread emails and could only answer 300 of them, how would you choose which ones to answer?”
