Managing Managed Accounts, Holiday Movie Favs & Die Hard Dichotomy

Industry Trends and Research

A couple of months back we asked NAPA-Net readers for their perspective on managed accounts—but that was mostly focused on whether or not you used them in your practice(s). The results, as you may recall, were …mixed. So, how are they applied to readers’ personal portfolios?

As it turns out, nearly half (46%) of this week’s respondents “don’t recommend managed accounts and don’t use them for their own accounts.”

As for the rest:

20% - I recommend managed accounts, and use them for my own account(s).

16% - I recommend managed accounts, but don't use them for my own account(s).

8% - I recommend managed accounts, but don't have the option for my own account(s).

The rest either recommend them only for selected plans, weren’t actively recommending managed accounts at the moment (but had in the past), or don’t recommend them, but did use them for their own accounts.

As for why those who didn’t use them in their own accounts …didn’t use them in their own accounts:

44% - I prefer to manage my own.

25% - Too expensive.

18% - Not an available option.

12% - I prefer target-date funds.

Favorite Holiday Movie(s)

You may recall that in 2020 in what was arguably a holiday-shortened voting cycle, A Christmas Story topped the list, regaining the slot it had held in 2017. In doing so, it pushed aside Christmas Vacation—which had been the “reining” champion the year before (and the year before that, though it still held onto the #2 slot, outpacing Miracle on 34th Street (traditional, with Natalie Wood), Elf and Home Alone…as for last year, well we had a two-way tie for fifth (Love, Actually & Die Hard), fourth went to Christmas Vacation, third to Elf, second to A Christmas Story—and a brand new top holiday movie choice—It’s a Wonderful Life! What will this year’s choice be?

Those movies drawing some (but not much) attention were: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Year Without a Santa Claus, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Love Actually, Emmett Otter's JugBand Christmas (Muppets), Home Alone, Bad Santa, Miracle on 34th Street (new), Muppet's Christmas Carol, Three Godfathers, and A Christmas Carol (Alistair Sim version).

The next five were:

The Santa Clause, White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street (traditional, with Natalie Wood), Frosty the Snowman, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon).

As for that top 5:

Die Hard (tied for #5 last year)

Elf (last year’s #3)

A Christmas Story (last year’s #2)

This year’s #2 – was last year’s #1: It's a Wonderful Life

But the winner of this year’s favorite holiday movie is…

Christmas Vacation – surging from #4 a year ago!

‘Holiday’ Bonus?

Oh—and our bonus question!  We asked readers if they considered Die Hard to be a holiday movie:

52% - Absolutely, yes!

46% - No way!

2% - I don't know what you're talking about...

So, it appears that here, as in most things in life, we remain a nation “divided.”

Thanks to everyone who participated in this week’s NAPA-Net Reader Radar poll!
