Senate Confirms 2 SEC Nominees

Regulatory Agencies

Mark Uyeda, nominated to fill the open Republican seat vacated by former Commissioner Elad Roisman, and Jaime Lizárraga, nominated to fill a slot being vacated by Democrat Allison Herren Lee whose term expires in June, were confirmed June 16 by voice vote.

Lee announced in March that she intended to step down once her successor has been confirmed. Roisman resigned his post in January.

Lizárraga was confirmed to serve a full five-year term until June 2027, while Uyeda will fill the time remaining on Roisman’s term until June 2023.

The commission will now consist of Gary Gensler (Chair), Caroline Crenshaw and Lizárraga representing the Democrats, and Hester Peirce and Uyeda representing the Republicans. At full capacity, the SEC has five commissioners, with no more than three from one party.

“We congratulate Jaime Lizárraga and Mark Uyeda on their successful Senate confirmations to serve as Commissioners. On behalf of the entire agency, we would like to welcome them both back to the Securities and Exchange Commission. We look forward to their many contributions to the agency and our work on behalf of the American public,” Commissioners Gensler, Lee, Crenshaw and Peirce said in a statement.

Lizárraga (at right) most recently served as Senior Advisor to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), overseeing issues relating to financial markets, housing, international financial institutions, immigration and small business policy. He also served as the Speaker’s liaison to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. As part of his 31-year public service career, he also served on the Democratic staff of the House Financial Services Committee and as a presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the SEC.

Uyeda (at left) was previously detailed from the SEC to the staff of Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), the ranking Republican of the Senate Banking Committee. Uyeda joined the SEC in 2006 and has worked in various capacities, including as Senior Advisor to Chairman Jay Clayton and Acting Chairman Michael Piwowar, and as Counsel to Commissioner Paul Atkins. He has also served as Assistant Director and Senior Special Counsel in the SEC’s Division of Investment Management.
