What’s the Biggest Obstacle to Offering a Retirement Plan?

Last week companion bills were introduced in the House and Senate intended to, among other things, encourage more small employers to offer retirement plans.

Those bills tried to do so by reducing the costs of administering plans (by expanding access to multiple employer plans, or MEPs) and providing tax credits to offset costs of expanding the match. Similarly, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has recently announced plans to reintroduce the SAFE Retirement Act, which also has measures designed to encourage employers, especially smaller ones, to offer retirement plans.

The reality is that there are many reasons why an employer of any size might choose not to offer a retirement plan at any particular time. But this week, we’d like you to weigh in:

“What is the largest obstacle to smaller employers offering a workplace retirement plan?”

Weigh in at http://ideas.asppa.org/smallemployerbarriers.

How it Works

You’ll be given two options from which to choose — pick one, or add one of your own choosing to the poll. Can’t decide between the lesser of two evils (or goods?) There’s an option for that as well. Then you’ll get two more to vote on, and so on. Vote as often as you’d like — and you can also check in and see which ideas are topping the list.

And while we’ve given you a list to start with, feel free to add your own (or post them in the comments below, and we’ll do that for you)!  We’ll post the results on Friday.
