Will ‘The Imitation Game’ Crack Oscar’s Code?

On Sunday the 87th Academy Awards will honor what is said to be the best films of 2014, but the NAPA Net reader “academy” has already weighed in.

Now, for fun, I threw in the nominees for worst picture that will be “acknowledged” on Saturday at the 35th annual Golden Raspberry Awards. These remained at the bottom of our reader votes as well, with the exception of “Chef,” a reader submission that is not actually in the running for either award. In our poll, “Chef” wound up behind “Left Behind,” and “The Legend of Hercules,” but stayed ahead of “Transformers 4,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas.” But then, the latter is currently ranked as (drumroll, please) … The Worst Movie of All Time on the IMDb's Bottom 100 list.

When it came to reader votes on the best movie of 2014, “The Imitation Game” was the real thing, standing head and shoulders above the rest of the competition.

“American Sniper” was in the crosshairs of enough readers to come in second, while “The Grand Budapest Hotel” was good for a third place check in.

The top five list was rounded out by “The Theory of Everything” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).”

“Foxcatcher,” a reader submission that isn’t up an official award at the Best Picture level, drew enough support among readers for a strong sixth place showing, just ahead of “Boyhood” — which, interestingly enough, has been the odds-on favorite among those who track the odds on such things to win Best Picture. We shall see.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our reader poll — we’ll have another one on Monday! Feel free to keep the discussion going — post a comment (or two) below!
