The total amount of assets held by private-sector retirement plans increased 14%, to $6.3 trillion, in 2010, according to the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA). Defined benefit plan assets increased 12%, to $2.4 trillion, and defined contribution plan assets increased by 16%, to $3.8 trillion.

The total number of retirement plans decreased in 2010 to approximately 701,000 plans, a 0.8% decrease from 2009. The number of DC plans also declined by 0.8%, while the number of DB plans decreased by 1.2%. The numbers come from EBSA’s Private Pension Plan Bulletin Abstract of Form 5500 Annual Reports, an annual publication that summarizes data on private pension plans. Read more here.
